What are contraindications to EMT?
Contraindication is a specific situation where massage may cause harm to the patient.
Contraindications may be termed a Caution, Regional or General. If you're aware of your horse having a contraindication please speak with your massage therapist before making a booking.
Massage therapy does not replace traditional medical or veterinary healthcare
- Caution: specialised techniques must be employed however the massage may proceed (ex: unsettled, aggressive or first-time treatment)
- Regional: one part of body that is an issue but won’t be massaged
- General: massage not conducted under any circumstances, ailment passed or vet clearance.

Examples of contraindications include::
- Abdominal Pain (Colic)
- Acute Joint Swelling
- Torn ligament
- Acute Arthritis
- Nerve damage, referred pain
- Shivers/Stringhalt
- Blood thinning medication
- Back pain
- Broken skin - wounds, cuts
- Burns
- Respiratory symptoms such as coughing, obstruction
- Allergies
- Extreme pain on palpation
- Muscle injury, severe or extreme injuries
- Fractures
- Malignancy (cancer)
- Hematoma
- Heart condition
- Non- weight bearing lameness
- Infection
- Inflammation, Pain, Heat, Swelling,
- Medication including Pain medication
- Recent serious injury
- Recent operation
- Skin conditions
- Neurological condition
